Although the Swastika Club existed under that name in Toronto for a relatively short time—less than two weeks—its presence attracted enormous attention and had considerable influence. Whether it was Nazi-sponsored, Nazi-inspired, or simply the work of thoughtless, prejudiced individuals is difficult to say definitively. We have seen that a few Swastika Club leaders—Mackay, for example—were very probably inspired by Hitlerism. But the split between Mackay and Ganter over whether to keep or abandon the swastika emblem indicates tension within the club. In retrospect, the leaders’ reluctance to identify themselves or to meet with representatives of the League for the Defence of Jewish Rights was probably due to the squabble within the club between a minority pro-Hitler faction and a majority non-Nazi (but xenophobic and mildly antisemitic) group. Hugh Garner, in Cabbagetown, portrays representatives of the Swastika Club at the Beaches as asking for support from a distinctly Canadian Fascist political organization. In the book, residents of the Beaches are shown to be xenophobic and antisemitic, but not political supporters of Fascism. In an attempt to gain support for the newly formed organization, one of the characters declares:
